This weekend marked another outstanding team effort as our IES crews stepped up once again to support communities across the UK.
Following the successful restoration of power supplies in areas served by SP Energy Networks, ScottishPower, and UK Power Networks, our teams were swiftly redeployed to assist Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) as their recovery operations continue.
Our terms are now headed to Perth, where they will undergo induction before deployment alongside the SSEN team. This rapid mobilisation reflects the strength of our partnerships and the shared commitment to restoring vital services as quickly and safely as possible.
In total, more than 200 linesmen & supported by dedicated operational staff, have worked tirelessly across multiple regions over recent days. Their unwavering professionalism, resilience, and teamwork have made a real difference to thousands of customers.
Chris Burchell, Managing Director at SSEN, thanked our own Conor O’Neill on Linkedin
We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved. Your efforts embody the spirit of collaboration and service that drives our industry—and ensures the lights keep coming back on when it matters most.
It’s been 18 months since the South Africa Overhead Lines (SA OHL) Programme got off the ground. At its heart, the initiative is about strengthening the UK’s workforce by welcoming experienced professionals from overseas. We sat down with programme coordinator Liam Kildunne to find out how the journey has unfolded so far.
In its early stages, recruitment drives were held almost monthly. As the programme matured and a reliable pipeline of candidates was established, the frequency naturally decreased.
Today, the process is much more structured. We do a CV screening, followed by interviews, and finally a practical, hands-on pole assessment, in South Africa. This ensures that only candidates with the right skills and confidence working at height progress successfully through the process.
“The UK is facing a serious shortage of skilled workers, with nearly half of our current workforce due to retire in the next decade,” Liam explained. “This programme is essential at the moment. Not just to fill today’s gaps, but to protect our networks for the future.”
When it comes to recruitment, Liam believes success rests on three key qualities:
While climbing techniques in Africa differ from those used in the UK, adaptability and resilience have proven to be more important than style. Once selected, new recruits undergo a full week of intensive training, covering company induction and certifications such as Pole Top Rescue, to ensure they are site-ready from the outset.
Adjusting to life in the UK has been a challenge at times for some of our colleagues particularly with the weather. “A cold November day can be a tough welcome,” Liam laughed, “but our recruits are resilient and have quickly adapted.”
The sense of community has been vital in supporting integration. Recruits arrive in groups, which means they can lean on one another while navigating homesickness and adjusting to a new culture. At the same time, the wider team has played an active role in making them feel welcomed and appreciated.

Since its launch, the programme has recruited more than 100 skilled workers from Africa, beginning with the first 50 in October 2024, a milestone that gained coverage in Construction Enquirer and Nairametrics. Most recently, IES marked the one-year anniversary of the very first recruits on 19 August.
Stories like Michael’s bring the programme to life. “Michael is an incredible lad and a pleasure to work with,” Liam shared. “During his probationary review, he told us he’d never experienced such a thorough process. It made me realise that we aren’t just filling roles – we’re genuinely changing lives.”
Although it’s still early to measure long-term outcomes such as retention and career progression, the programme has already demonstrated its value in building a skilled, diverse, and future-ready workforce.
Looking five years ahead, Liam is clear about what success will mean: “We’ll have the people we need to keep our networks running and to upgrade them for the future. Just like our veteran linemen, many of our poles are over 60 years old, so it’s time for both to enjoy a well-earned retirement, while the next generation takes us forward.”
IES Group has successfully acquired Nexus Power out of Administration, bringing on board a respected leader in Extra High Voltage (EHV) cable jointing and power solutions.
This strategic move enhances IES’s capacity to deliver complex electrical works, including projects within the EHV and Offshore jointing markets, further strengthening its position as a trusted partner to clients across the UK.
Founded in 2012, Nexus Power has established a strong reputation for technical excellence and reliability. Their expertise spans high voltage jointing up to 400 kV, including fluid‑filled and XLPE systems. The business also offers a comprehensive range of modular power and data distribution solutions for commercial, education, healthcare, and industrial environments.
“This acquisition marks a significant milestone for the IES Group,” said Breandan Flynn, IES CEO “Nexus Power brings exceptional talent, proven expertise, and a strong alignment with our values. Together, we are well positioned to take on more complex and challenging projects while continuing to deliver the highest standards of quality and safety for our clients.”
Conor O’Neill, who will be leading the integration of the Nexus Power team, added:
“I’m delighted to welcome Nexus Power into the IES Group. Their people are highly skilled and share the same commitment to quality and safety that defines our business. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be working closely together to ensure a smooth transition, and I know our combined strengths will create exciting opportunities for both our teams and our clients.”
The Nexus Power team will continue in their existing roles, ensuring continuity for both staff and clients. Reporting to Conor O’Neill, the team will begin integrating with IES immediately.
This acquisition reflects IES Group’s ongoing commitment to growth, innovation, and delivering best‑in‑class solutions for clients. It also underscores the company’s confidence in the UK’s growing demand for complex energy and infrastructure projects.

For many years, IES has proudly been supporting Timperley Amateur Boxing Club (TABC) – a grassroots organisation making a huge difference to health, wellbeing, and opportunity in the Altrincham community.
Over the years, our sponsorship has helped the club to develop and provide inclusive activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Not only does the team hold weekly sessions for everyone from children and young adults to veterans, but they’re also tackling important social challenges such as health inequality, youth crime prevention, and social isolation with further dedicated sessions for minority groups.
A Boxing Community for Everyone
TABC is far more than a boxing gym. It’s a safe, welcoming space where people come together to improve their health, learn new skills, and build lasting connections. The club runs an impressive programme of activities, including:
IES’s Role: Backing a Long-Term Vision
IES’s support has helped the club grow and thrive, ensuring it can continue delivering life-changing opportunities for the community. Our sponsorship has contributed to strengthening the club’s facilities and programmes to provide a safe and welcoming environment, and expanding access so that more people can benefit from the opportunities on offer.
IES CEO Breandan Flynn has been personally involved in supporting TABC, recognising the unique role it plays in building a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive community.
“We’re proud to stand alongside Timperley Amateur Boxing Club. What they achieve here is extraordinary. From supporting young people and veterans to creating inclusive activities for people with disabilities. At IES, we believe in investing in projects that deliver real, lasting social value, and TABC is a shining example of that.”
Breandan Flynn, CEO, IES
Rising Stars of Timperley
The Boxing Club isn’t just building stronger communities, it’s also about building determination and character, proven in how many champions it’s producing. Most recently, sixteen-year-old Luke who has been training with the club for three years, won the 58kg category at the Manchester Box Cup this weekend.
Twelve-year old Savannah has very quickly made her mark too, winning the Minors Schoolgirl National Championships in the 36kg category after just two years of training. Savannah has shown incredible determination and talent, proving that with the right support, young people can achieve extraordinary things.

Success stories like Luke and Savannah are made possible thanks to the club’s long-term growth, stability, and local supporters like IES – support that we’re proud to have been giving for many years.
Delivering Social Value Where It Matters
Our sponsorship of TABC is about more than sport. It’s about investing in social value and creating impact that lasts:

At IES Utilities Group, our team is built on dedication, skill, and a shared commitment to excellence, and one of our inspiring team members, Michael Chihabve, exemplifies these qualities.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Michael joined us through our international recruitment programme and has since become a valued Overhead Linesperson. His story reflects resilience, passion, and the power of being welcomed with kindness.
Starting Strong
Michael began his journey with IES working in the stores, where he gained first-hand experience handling materials and equipment. From there, he progressed to working on defect repairs and now contributes to larger infrastructure schemes alongside one of our specialist line teams.
“The transition was way better than I expected. When I arrived in Manchester, the team was very helpful, warm and welcoming. I met others and felt like I was becoming part of the team already. Plus, with being based in the UK, I now had access to all the things I couldn’t get or afford at home.”
Learning and Growing
Our IES team has supported Michael with everything he needed to get started, including training and accommodation.
“The team were brilliant. I learnt how to safely climb UK poles, understood the materials we use, and how to apply them. I learnt a lot, very quickly.”
“It’s quite different in England! Here, there’s a machine for every task and modern vehicles that are easier to drive. Working conditions are safe, and I have a better income. My only worry before I came was the cold weather… but the PPE IES provides is perfect, especially the much-needed winter gear!”
Team Spirit and Support
Michael credits his positive experience at IES to the people he works with.
“Thanks to God because all the people I’ve encountered as teammates are amazing! Life is good at work. We work together, we achieve our goals, and everyone I’ve worked with has been supportive. Whether I’m with Steve in Ellesmere or John in Bangor, my managers have been fantastic.”
Initially concerned about adjusting to a new culture and workplace, Michael quickly found himself embraced with kindness and respect:
“I was worried I might face difficulties settling in, but not even for a second did I feel out of place. I’ve got colleagues who feel like family.”
Why IES?
“What makes IES a good employer is the help and support they offer to every team member, from the moment you arrive to the moment you’re able to stand on your own two feet.”
Michael’s technical skills are now being fully utilised in a role that requires precision, safety awareness, and confidence working at height.
“You need to be physically fit as there’s climbing and lifting involved. Be comfortable working at heights and always prioritise safety. Be a team player and get hands-on with tools and equipment. The job is demanding but very rewarding.
I want to grow alongside IES, establishing myself as a valuable employee. I’m committed to contributing to the company’s success.”
Life Outside Work
Outside of work, Michael, also known by his stage name Tafah, has built a fulfilling life in the UK.
“I’m renting my own place now and it’s very comfortable. I’ve made friends, joined a gym, a football club, and found a church community. Music is still a big part of my life, and I’ve even met other musicians here.”
There’s just one small thing he’d change: “I wish I knew a bit of Welsh! Since I work in Wales, it would be great to understand and connect even more with the local people.”
Michael’s story is a brilliant example of the opportunities IES offers to talented people from all over the world. We’re proud to support his development, and very lucky to have him as part of our team.
At IES we’re proud to celebrate the incredible efforts of our colleagues who go above and beyond to make a difference.

What do you get when you mix sore legs, Lycra, and a lot of heart? A coast-to-coast cycling challenge packed with adventure, mishaps, laughs and a huge fundraising total for an incredible charity.
Day 1: Wheels, Wobbles & Winged Intruders
Kicking off in sunny Southport, spirits were high as the team rolled out towards Liverpool. A few wrong turns and a surprise five-mile detour later, we were finding our rhythm, and our way. Highlights included:
After 80 miles, we arrived in Dinting to a hero’s welcome, Mettrick’s burgers, and a very well-earned pint.
Day 2: Grit, Gear & Gerald
Starting strong with new faces and fresh legs, Day 2 took us deep into Yorkshire. Just one catch, the support van broke down by 11am. Cool under pressure, Mr Logistics (aka Jon Matthews) launched a flawless Plan B.
Fuelled by a heartfelt video from Reuben’s Retreat (and a pie or two), we powered through the stunning scenery and regrouped in Selby, 70 more miles in the bag.
Day 3: Hull’s Kitchen & a Side of Ice Cream
Low on energy but high on determination, Day 3 kicked off with yoga, endless fields of poppies, and a 9:30am ice cream chase. Hull was an experience. But the real reward was waiting on the coast.
With a final sprint and a banner held high, we reached Hornsea. 217 miles done. Emotions ran high, legs ran low, and the sea breeze never felt so good.
Total distance: nearly 240 miles (including bonus miles from getting lost – we felt every single one).
Why We Rode
Thanks to amazing support, we’ve now raised over £4,500, which is enough to fund around 18 families to enjoy respite weekends at Reuben’s Retreat.

On Sunday 18th May 2025, our colleague Lauren Wainhouse and mum proudly completed the Manchester 10k, raising money for a charity very close to their hearts: 4Louis.
They chose to run in support of 4Louis, a charity that provides emotional and practical help to families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or child loss. The charity offers memory boxes, bereavement resources, and vital support during the most difficult times.
The cause was particularly personal for Lauren whose sister-in-law’s great niece was recently born asleep. Her parents received support and comfort from 4Louis, and this inspired the decision to fundraise in their memory and honour.
Together, Lauren and her mum completed the race with determination and compassion, helping to raise awareness and funds for a charity that offers light in incredibly dark moments.
Thank You for Your Support
We’d like to say a huge well done to both of them, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated and showed their support along the way.
Although the race is now over, the fundraising page is still open for anyone who would like to contribute to this important cause:
