Ensuring Safety & Resilience at Stansted Airport Cargo Area

Challenge

• Constant vehicle activity within a live cargo hub, with high volumes of HGV and service traffic
• Working in an extremely traffic-sensitive environment, with large vehicles operating in confined spaces adjacent to critical gas assets
• Limited operational windows and controlled access due to the presence of numerous underground services
• Maintaining safe conditions for both airport personnel and site teams throughout the works
• Meeting stringent Department for Transport (DfT) and UK Roads Liaison Group (UKRLG) standards

Solution

• Conducted a detailed risk assessment aligned with DfT guidance and UKRLG standards to determine the most appropriate VRS solution
• Engaged early with Cadent Gas, design partners and airport authorities to address safety, access and technical requirements
• Developed a phased construction and traffic management plan to maintain safe working zones and minimise disruption to cargo operations
• Implemented regular briefings, close supervision and coordinated scheduling to support safe and efficient delivery in a constrained environment
• Installed eight heavy-duty safety bollards around the existing gas governor to protect critical infrastructure from potential vehicle impact
