Investing in Our Community: IES’s Long-Term Support for Timperley Amateur Boxing Club

For many years, IES has proudly been supporting Timperley Amateur Boxing Club (TABC) – a grassroots organisation making a huge difference to health, wellbeing, and opportunity in the Altrincham community.

Over the years, our sponsorship has helped the club to develop and provide inclusive activities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Not only does the team hold weekly sessions for everyone from children and young adults to veterans, but they’re also tackling important social challenges such as health inequality, youth crime prevention, and social isolation with further dedicated sessions for minority groups.

A Boxing Community for Everyone

TABC is far more than a boxing gym. It’s a safe, welcoming space where people come together to improve their health, learn new skills, and build lasting connections. The club runs an impressive programme of activities, including:

IES’s Role: Backing a Long-Term Vision
IES’s support has helped the club grow and thrive, ensuring it can continue delivering life-changing opportunities for the community. From Zimbabwe to Overhead Lines: Michael Chihabve’s Journey with IES

At IES Utilities Group, our team is built on dedication, skill, and a shared commitment to excellence, and one of our inspiring team members, Michael Chihabve, exemplifies these qualities.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Michael joined us through our international recruitment programme and has since become a valued Overhead Linesperson. His story reflects resilience, passion, and the power of being welcomed with kindness.

Starting Strong

Michael began his journey with IES working in the stores, where he gained first-hand experience handling materials and equipment. From there, he progressed to working on defect repairs and now contributes to larger infrastructure schemes alongside one of our specialist line teams.

“The transition was way better than I expected. When I arrived in Manchester, the team was very helpful, warm and welcoming. I met others and felt like I was becoming part of the team already. Plus, with being based in the UK, I now had access to all the things I couldn’t get or afford at home.”

Learning and Growing

Our IES team has supported Michael with everything he needed to get started, including training and accommodation.

“The team were brilliant. I learnt how to safely climb UK poles, understood the materials we use, and how to apply them. I learnt a lot, very quickly.”

“It’s quite different in England! Here, there’s a machine for every task and modern vehicles that are easier to drive. Working conditions are safe, and I have a better income. My only worry before I came was the cold weather… but the PPE IES provides is perfect, especially the much-needed winter gear!”

Team Spirit and Support

Michael credits his positive experience at IES to the people he works with.

“Thanks to God because all the people I’ve encountered as teammates are amazing! Life is good at work. We work together, we achieve our goals, and everyone I’ve worked with has been supportive. Whether I’m with Steve in Ellesmere or John in Bangor, my managers have been fantastic.”

Initially concerned about adjusting to a new culture and workplace, Michael quickly found himself embraced with kindness and respect:

“I was worried I might face difficulties settling in, but not even for a second did I feel out of place. I’ve got colleagues who feel like family.”

Why IES?

“What makes IES a good employer is the help and support they offer to every team member, from the moment you arrive to the moment you’re able to stand on your own two feet.”

Michael’s technical skills are now being fully utilised in a role that requires precision, safety awareness, and confidence working at height.

“You need to be physically fit as there’s climbing and lifting involved. Be comfortable working at heights and always prioritise safety. Be a team player and get hands-on with tools and equipment. The job is demanding but very rewarding.

I want to grow alongside IES, establishing myself as a valuable employee. I’m committed to contributing to the company’s success.”

Life Outside Work

Outside of work, Michael, also known by his stage name Tafah, has built a fulfilling life in the UK.

“I’m renting my own place now and it’s very comfortable. I’ve made friends, joined a gym, a football club, and found a church community. Music is still a big part of my life, and I’ve even met other musicians here.”

There’s just one small thing he’d change:  “I wish I knew a bit of Welsh! Since I work in Wales, it would be great to understand and connect even more with the local people.”

Michael’s story is a brilliant example of the opportunities IES offers to talented people from all over the world. We’re proud to support his development, and very lucky to have him as part of our team.

Colleague goes Coast-to-Coast in support of Reuben’s Retreat

At IES we’re proud to celebrate the incredible efforts of our colleagues who go above and beyond to make a difference.

Earlier this month, Dan Carter and a group of friends took on a coast-to-coast cycling challenge, covering nearly 240 miles in just three days – all to raise funds for the brilliant work of Reuben’s Retreat.

https://www.reubensretreat.org/

Their determination, camaraderie, and commitment to the cause truly embody the spirit of giving back.

Read on for Dan’s account of an unforgettable journey, filled with grit, laughter, and generosity, all in support of families who need it most.

What do you get when you mix sore legs, Lycra, and a lot of heart? A coast-to-coast cycling challenge packed with adventure, mishaps, laughs and a huge fundraising total for an incredible charity.

Day 1: Wheels, Wobbles & Winged Intruders

Kicking off in sunny Southport, spirits were high as the team rolled out towards Liverpool. A few wrong turns and a surprise five-mile detour later, we were finding our rhythm, and our way. Highlights included:

After 80 miles, we arrived in Dinting to a hero’s welcome, Mettrick’s burgers, and a very well-earned pint.

Day 2: Grit, Gear & Gerald

Starting strong with new faces and fresh legs, Day 2 took us deep into Yorkshire. Just one catch, the support van broke down by 11am. Cool under pressure, Mr Logistics (aka Jon Matthews) launched a flawless Plan B.

Fuelled by a heartfelt video from Reuben’s Retreat (and a pie or two), we powered through the stunning scenery and regrouped in Selby, 70 more miles in the bag.

Day 3: Hull’s Kitchen & a Side of Ice Cream

Low on energy but high on determination, Day 3 kicked off with yoga, endless fields of poppies, and a 9:30am ice cream chase. Hull was an experience. But the real reward was waiting on the coast.

With a final sprint and a banner held high, we reached Hornsea. 217 miles done. Emotions ran high, legs ran low, and the sea breeze never felt so good.

Total distance: nearly 240 miles (including bonus miles from getting lost  – we felt every single one).

Why We Rode

Thanks to amazing support, we’ve now raised over £4,500, which is enough to fund around 18 families to enjoy respite weekends at Reuben’s Retreat.

Final Stats

Thank you to everyone who supported us!

Colleague Completes Manchester 10k in Support of 4Louis Charity

On Sunday 18th May 2025, our colleague Lauren Wainhouse and mum proudly completed the Manchester 10k, raising money for a charity very close to their hearts: 4Louis.

They chose to run in support of 4Louis, a charity that provides emotional and practical help to families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or child loss. The charity offers memory boxes, bereavement resources, and vital support during the most difficult times.

The cause was particularly personal for Lauren whose sister-in-law’s great niece was recently born asleep. Her parents received support and comfort from 4Louis, and this inspired the decision to fundraise in their memory and honour.

Together, Lauren and her mum completed the race with determination and compassion, helping to raise awareness and funds for a charity that offers light in incredibly dark moments.

Thank You for Your Support

We’d like to say a huge well done to both of them, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated and showed their support along the way.

Although the race is now over, the fundraising page is still open for anyone who would like to contribute to this important cause:

This significant award builds upon the strong relationship we’ve developed with National Gas over the past three years and underscores our unwavering commitment to safety, reliability, and performance.

Comprex® Impulse Cleaning Pilot at Honey Hill Delivers “Outstanding” Results

IES Utilities Group has successfully introduced an innovative pipe cleaning solution to the UK water sector, delivering results that have been described by the client as having “exceeded expectations.”

As part of a recent pilot project in collaboration with Northumbrian Water, IES deployed the Comprex® Impulse Cleaning technology on a 12-inch (300mm) cement-lined cast iron main laid in 1922. The pipe, located in Honey Hill, had been taken out of supply due to high levels of internal sediment and mineral deposits, posing a significant risk of discolouration.

Despite the scale of the challenge, IES cleaned and recharged the 2,000-metre section of the main in less than a day, achieving a compliant turbidity level of 2.2 NTU—at a fraction of the cost and environmental impact of traditional techniques.

Efficient, Sustainable, and Safe
Exclusively offered in the UK by IES, the Comprex® method combines air and water pulses to safely and effectively clean pipework without the use of chemicals or high-pressure systems. Key benefits include:
• Minimal water usage—less than 10% of that required for conventional flushing
• Extremely low waste output, usually manageable on-site
• Superior deposit removal with air and water pulses at high shear velocities (20 m/s)
• No risk of over-pressurisation—cleaning pressures are set below mains operating pressure
• Chemical-free, using only medical-grade air and potable water
• Quiet operation with low noise levels
• DWI-approved, ensuring safety and compliance
• Versatility across pipe types and sizes (from 50mm to 1200mm diameter)

How It Works
Comprex® replaces the water in the pipeline with compressed air at equal pressure to prevent ingress. Controlled air and water pulses are then introduced, gradually increasing in frequency and force. The process efficiently removes soft materials like biofilms and sediments first, followed by harder deposits—restoring turbidity to compliant levels in a short time frame.

Sampling and Results
Water quality samples were taken every 10 minutes by independent experts, showing clear evidence of staged cleaning progress. Initial turbidity spikes consisted mainly of biofilms and sediment, followed by samples rich in metals—proof of deeper layer removal.

A Promising Future
The pilot has been hailed as a success, with the client preparing a business case for wider deployment across a 6 to 12-month programme. The solution is expected to reduce the risk of water quality incidents and improve efficiency in strategic, distribution, and treatment assets. Additionally, it offers significant support in achieving lower Compliance Risk Index (CRI) scores.
